I don't get Malcolm X!?

So in my history book it talks about how he went to the Mecca or whatever and was inspired by how people of all races were living together and treating each other with respect and equality... But then it also says later on in the book that he believed in keeping the races separate and that the blacks should use violence to gain rights?! Im confused! Isnt that the direct opposite!
